Essay length

Is there an essay length of UofR. I'm using the commonn app, and I was wondering if there is a word limit, if so, what is the limit?

Thanks!

I believe the supplemental essays are 125 words or less. The common app essay can be as long as you want but it should be around 500 words. 700+ is really stretching it.

My length is about 1300. However, if there isn’t a limit… then I’m going to go with my gut and not cut stuff out.

Cut stuff out. Show the admissions counselor that you can write succinctly - it’s much harder to be concise than to be verbose. The “no limit” is simply a technical one; the Common App will accept the essay.

Do you really think you’ll impress an admissions counselor by making him or her read an essay 3 times longer than advised? Imagine what would happen to their time if everyone did that?

I’m slowly getting down to 1100

Length, at least for Rochester, is not as significant a consideration as you might think. As an Admissions Counselor, I would prefer to read well thought out responses in which you articulate what you believe to be most important to you and your college search. Quality content will always trump length.

Thank you MConklin

1300, are you shutting me?

No sane human being who goes through 100’s of these things per week is going to seriously read a 1300 essay. Skimming is probably most you can expect for a monster that size, no matter what the admissions counselors tell you.

Seriously, put yourself in their shoes. I just opened up mine from 4 years ago: 350 words.
