Essay Lengths

What are the character limits for each of the four essays. I am waiting to submit my part one until i get my Nov. SAT scores, but i want to work on my essays.

4900 long
1600 short

for the long one you can also do a microsoft word 1 page max and attach that on

How much under can the long essay be? Can it be 3500 characters even if they have a max of 4900?

mine was pretty much around there, but it was on word and exactly a page...so...well i turned that in so i hope it's ok

I don't think it matters if its under, just as long as it still conveys what you want it to convey...Last year mine was 2745 characters with spaces (I submitted my 500-word Common App Essay). This is the first time I've thought of it in the context of being "too short," actually. I think both of you are fine. :)

hi, ebonytear, mind telling what the topic of your common app essay was? thanks~! i'd definitely like to use my common app one for my stanford app as well, if only i can find a way to do so, hehe~

I'm guessing ebonytear used the common app topic about a creative piece that has influenced you. number 4, I think.

actually i wrote about whatever i wanted for the common app - the "tell us something about yourself."

what I'll tell you about the photo essay is this: don't feel constrained by the photo part. submit your common app essay if you feel that represents you best, and take a photo of something related to it. Someone I know wrote about improving their writing and took a picture of paper and submitted that. The photo is really flexible and you can be really creative with it. It is basically an interesting spin on the generic personal statement question. You don't have to write the essay ON a specific photo, you can write the essay or already have an essay and then "compose" (take) the photograph. If you wrote about a burrito, take a pic of that...if you wrote about a place, a person...if you wrote about calculus, take a picture of your calculus book. Some people fall into the trap of describing the photograph and that's a big problem as well.

I wrote my essay on a church conference in Poland the summer before my senior year and working on a team with people from Poland, Sweden, etc. It was about teamwork and all that fun stuff...I submitted a picture of my team.

do the character count limits include spaces?

Yes, I think so.
