Essay on deceased parent?

Is it appropriate?
I was planning on writing on how this tragic event affected my views on reality and how it somewhat made me "become" more of an adult, but I don't want to gain any pity or sympathy from the reader.

I kind of want to let them know what kind of person I am,and how I deal with daily events.
Unfortunately I don't see how this topic could fit in any of the common app personal essay choices.

I think this will fit prompt #1. A parent’s influence can be thought to be central to your identity, and the loss of a parent is a profound event that certainly might be something your application might be incomplete without.

Sure, it’s appropriate.
