Essay on magazines?

So I have a bit of an unconventional (I think) idea for an essay, and I'd love opinions.

Basically, I want to write about the magazine rack in my room, and the different magazines I have on it and what they show about me. I think it might demonstrate another side to me, more what I would contribute to the college community outside of my academics and ECs.

I would probably touch upon these magazines to show different facets of my personality and interests.

Time: Current events, especially science-related news
Sports Illustrated: Use this to highlight my LOVE of the Red Sox, I think this is a little unique because I am very well-informed about baseball and I am a girl :)
People: Fun, gossip (run the risk of sounding too shallow?)

I may also add some stuff in about how I've been known to pick up my sister's National Geographic and my dad's Business Week...

I haven't really fleshed this idea out too much, and it obviously still needs more thinking, but how does it preliminarily sound?

This sounds like an interesting idea. Is there a way you could mix in your ECs at all? Because just saying you love the Red Sox, for example, just shows that you’re a baseball fan…how does that contribute to a college campus?

I think it’s just another unique side to me that doesn’t come across at all in the rest of my app.

But yes, I’m very science focused, want to be pre-med etc. and I think I can address that with Time.

I have an analogous idea for mine and I think both of our essays would be unique and fun to read!

great, thanks, that’s what I’m thinking too!

Any more opinions?

I think it would be good for you to incorporate ECs, but you don’t have to. I made my essay about cupcakes and only BRIEFLY mentioned ECs and grades… and 4/5 colleges I applied to sent me a special email saying how much they enjoyed my essay…

If you focus more on your diverse interests, you shouldn’t have to go out of the way to talk about ECs
