PROMPT: Do we benefit from learning about the flaws of people we admire and respect? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.
ESSAY:
Growing up, kids often have a hero that they try worship. Often times, children find out that their hero has made a mistake, and they become very disappointed and upset. Little do they know that learning about the imperfections of people we respect and admire can be beneficial to our lives.
An excellent example of this is the events that occurred after World War II. When World War II was over, many colonies seized this period of time to achieve sovereignty from their mother state. Colonies all around the world ridiculed the European World powers. It was these very World powers who claimed their superiority over the colonial peoples. These very World powers boasted their “civilized” mannerisms and advanced technologies all over the world, basically disparaging other nations by dubbing them barbaric. After the World Wars these colonies argued that the European nations were the barbaric states because they used their advanced technological gains to create history’s largest war slaughter count. Colonies reasoned that Europeans weren’t superiorly advanced creatures and summoned the courage and motivation to fight them off. A huge number of colonial states around the world were celebrated sovereignty after World War II.
Sometimes, seeing that flaws of our role models actually helps us. People need to realize that our heroes are imperfect; yet, they still have been successful. You do not need to be perfect to be great.
