I have just finished my junior year high school and have begun to consider possible topics for my common app essay. I think I have an idea of what I want to write about... however, this topic is very, very personal. I am worried that if I do submit an essay on this topic to my colleges, it will come back to bite me in the butt. :) This is probably a stupid question and a useless worry... But would a college ever release any kind of information about my essay in any situation? Like maybe in contact with my counselor or something like that? Do colleges have any right at all to release or publish my essay without my permission?</p>
<p>I’m pretty sure they can contact your counselor if they find something worrying in your essay. For example, if you admit cheating, the college will investigate.</p>
<p>A general rule of thumb is, if you wouldn’t want to discuss it with an adcom, don’t write it.</p>
