Essay Prompt #5 Common App

Hi, I was just wondering if what I would like to write about fits into the prompt.

Prompt: Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community, or family.

I want to write about how my brother was diagnosed with cancer when I was nine and I had to become more responsible, independent, and mature.

Would that be on topic or off topic?

That works. The prompts are very loose anyways.

It should be fine and better if it’s related to the study of medicine, psychology or social work.

Sorry for kind of reviving this thread but I too was wondering if what I’m going to write about fits into the context of the 5th CA essay prompt about the transition to adulthood.
I was wondering if I could write about raising my baby brother and sort of becoming a parent-like figure to him, as he was born when i was 16 and my parents arent what they used to be in their old days…

thank you

sounds like a good fit to me

Quite a good topic YNN1996. And no one should think that a personal family topic in an essay needs to tie in with career objectives.

Both sound very good but you both need to make sure that the school at the end of reading your essay wants to accept your sibling and not you.
This is more of a worry for the essay of the original poster of this thread.

Thank you very much :)

YBN1996, i just began to write about the same exact topic as you(coincidentally). i too had a new sibling when i was 15 and im also writing how that made me more like an adult

If you are applying to a competitive college, try to have the essay show your college-relevant skills.

Would parental responsibility count as a college relevant skill? I mean it’s what the prompt asks for as a transition to adulthood…
Hojoo235 how did that essay turn out for you? Im still stuck in mine; simply can’t find some time to focus :/
