OK well I'm a writer, and writing essays and such has never really been a problem for me. all the other essays I'm writing for, for other schools, have been relatively easily done. but the rice prompy is kinda confusing. could someone explain to me what exactly the question is asking?

what perspective do you feel that you will contribute to life at rice?

like, are they asking you what you will contribute to rice? or what -perspective-? cuz the latter seems difficult.............

anyhoo, help ASAP would be nice. I'm applying interim decision and I got to finish this by Dec. 1 haha. thanks

I had to write that for transfer admission. I dont know what I they thought about my essay, but I was accepted. I denied the question and said that I challange assumptions. I talked about how the question was invalid and how I am not afraid to do take a different stance. Kind of a wierd response, but I guess it worked.

What do you bring to Rice? How have your experiences so far formed you into a community member that will not only take an education away from Rice but, at the same time, give something unique back to the Rice community? What makes you different?

wrprice - thank you for stating the questions in "plain English"! I was completely baffled the first (and second and third!) time I read the question on the app.

Do regular decision applicants using the Common App have to do this essay? It doesn't seem to be on the Rice Supplement...but why would some have to do it and not others..

It's on the Rice application. If you want to avoid it, just do the Common App and the Rice supplement. It's not on the Rice supplement. Hope that made sense. Check out both and you'll see what I mean.

Thanks...it's not that I want to avoid it, it's just that I'm using the common app for all my applications. Now I have to decide what to put in that mysterious box : )

Put anything you want. My brother made the box into the Beatle's White album cover and he was accepted. (Basically, all he did was write 'The Beatles' in that font they used in themiddle of the box.) =P As you can tel, you can spend 4 mins. on the box and it will have no toll on you in the long run. ^_^

If I submitted Part 1 of the Rice application online, can I still use the common application and the Rice supplement or am I bound to the specific Rice application.

Everything I have done: teacher recs, school report, etc. have been specifically for Rice, so I'm not sure if I can change at this point

Yes, I asked an admissions officer about that and she said that's fine. (That's what I did for interim and they had no complaints. I haven't heard from them yet, though.)

I wrote some on my family and how my grandfathers taught me the meaning of perseverance, education, and hard work. Then I talked about my unique pool of friends (about 50 that are completely different nationalities) and my experiences (I went to a bar mitzvah and then to a chinese birthday and then to a mexican birthday back to back to back). The I talk about how in elementary my chinese friend and I started a little math race to see who could finish a program first. Several other people became interested and as a result we had six 5th graders complete a 9th grade level program.

I also mix in my passion for math, science, art. Then I switch from english to spanish and throw in the occassional japanese and german.
