essay question - too risqu

my essay's going to be about getting involved with the worldwide feminist movement/ women's rights in the arab world (i live in the uae). More specifically, starting an all girl band and a zine distro/establishing a zine culture here (both the first of their kinds in the middle east region), vs the somewhat misogynistic attitudes of people here.

Among other things, I wanted to mention our first gig, where we threw out tampons (packets spraypainted to look like candy, with little social critiques written on them), ie as a means of prompting people to think.
only, does this sound too risqu

the tampons is WAY too much, really. I can't see that turning out good.

But as leftist as we know US colleges and universities to be, I can't see it hurting you. I'm sure they have a need for a few of the "activist" type. It makes you seem unique.

I say go for it. It's original and shows you are doing unique, different things. It makes you stand out from the crowd who are all choosing "safe" subjects to write about.

Besides, if you weren't embarrassed to do it, you shouldn't be embarrassed to write about it.

No, what you did does not sound too risque unless you are applying to very conservative universities. Given your political leanings, however I doubt that you're applying to those kind of places.

With that kind of passion and activism DEFINITELY include it

u didn't cause vandalism right?
If u didn't that ok, but the tampoon part does sound like vandalism.
The topic is ok to write about but the vandalism part should be out.

I say go for it. I really don't see why not.

do it, sounds awesome

Include it if you want to, but keep in mind that the topic of your essay is strong enough that it would make a really great and memorable impression even without the tampon stuff.

it sounds good. Go for it (just not for very conservative places - as has been said - e.g. Wake Forest)
You're applying to Columbia though - so you should be fine.

embarassed - not at all (it was pretty fun actually),I\mjsut worried that it might hurt my chances if someone took offence to it or something.

vandalism haha not at all, we just threw them out from the stage to a room of about 3-400 people.

but this seems to be a pretty mixed consesnus; for the people who said go for it, do you think it significantly boosts the essay,or would it be the same without it? cheers.

if u can sow the bright side of the participation in movement it wud work wonders but if u cannot get the writing to say what lies in the heart..u may be screwed........so be careful with language and use of words

Throwing wrapped tampons into a crowd during a concert doesn't sound like vandalism. It's not as if she was spray painting the crowd or throwing grenades.

What were the messages on the tampons? If the messages were things like "All men are (expletive) pigs," that probably would not be something to share with adcoms. I would be surprised, though, if you did something like that. You seem pretty thoughtful.
