I have a few brief questions about the essay.

Am I better showing off my community service (250+ hours), or my genuine passion for knowledge (avid NPR fan, National Geo collection to 1915, stuff like that)?

Is it safe to say my idol was Salvidor Dali even though he was a druggie and pretty freaking crazy?

How can I best show my passion for learning through my essays? My stats aren't stellar (3.75 1380), but I honestly belong at Chicago because I love learning and I want them to know it.

genuine passion for knowledge of course! say whatever you want, seriously. I told them that I loved Confessions of a Shopaholic, The Onion, Jon Stewart, and then some serious things. Dali is awesome

The more quirky the better

hm.. just to ride on this post.. i am working on the 1st essay question and chose to touch on things and people that impacted my life, and how they impacted my believes... basically it's my thoughts etc.. nothing quirky though.. is it alright? cos my school actually employed the service of an application counsellor and each student has one session each. I went for mine and he told me to simply write about myself.. don't need any examples to show any belief I have or any character trait im trying to show. but won't that sound very superficial and unconvincing?

Write it all in! U of C wants to know their students intellectual interests beside their e.c. If you are passionate, write about Dali. Let's put it this way- for Essay Option 3, I am writing on an essay titled "Philosophy and the Phone book".
