Prompt:

Describe the unique qualities that attract you to the specific undergraduate College or School (including preferred admission and dual degree programs) to which you are applying at the University of Michigan. How would that curriculum support your interests?

Are we supposed to talk about our major, or the school our major is in? Is either an option? I know a lot about my major, but not much about the LSA.

Thanks in advance.

I got in EA, so hopefully I’m qualified to answer this. I think the question is basically asking about your academic reasons for applying to UMich. Is there a particular class or research lab that you’re interested in? I don’t think there is any required topic – they just want to see that you’ve done your homework and are actually interested in the school.

Thank you Nip. Make sure to not eat any poisonous mushrooms. One love.

Talk to some degree about the school as a whole, especially for LSA since you will be getting a liberal arts education there, and go into detail about the field you intend to study. Do your research on the department first.

I got in through early action (still waiting on preferred admit decision for pharmacy). I would say generally just talk about what you’re interested in and why umich is a good option for your interests (what can umich offer that other schools can’t?).

I’m not sure if I did it correctly (given my unique circumstances) but I wrote about why I wanted to go there and what they offered for me personally that I couldn’t get anywhere else. I also talked about my internship at one of the research labs in the pharmacy school (my experiences there, what I did, what I got out of the internship, and how it affected me). Then, I mentioned UROP (Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program), small class sizes/individualized education stuff, and what classes I was interested in taking at umich.

When you answer this essay, do you have to have a specific college/major in mind? What if you were planning to go in to college undecided?

Even if you don’t have a specific major in mind, you might find it easier pretending you did then just focusing on that one area. The major you choose on Common App isn’t binding at all, if you get admitted you could go to another major. If you decide to write about how you’re undecided, I would write about all the various opportunities UMI offers in a vast field and how that would help you decide on what you want to do etc.,
