essay question

Fascinating and informative discussion.
I am a female applying to engineering at NEU. Have visited 3 times. Applied EA last month. Have 4.0 and 2360 SAT. NEU and UMass are my favorites because of merit aid and cost. I was very much banking on NEU scholarships, now reading this thread I have lost all hope, lol. I was too honest and listed all my other schools. That will probably hurt me at NEU although I have zero interest in the reach schools even if accepted because they don't give merit aid.
RatedPG said it right, what is done is done. Let us all hope for the best. But always be prepared for the worst: I have plan C which takes care of a rejection from UMass!

CollegeBound, where are you from? You may still have a good shot if you come from an under represented state (based on what I've read).

And which UMass school did you apply to?

yeah i kept bc and gtown as the other schools i applied to, cus at that time i wasnt sure with what schools i wanted to apply so i just sent in the schools i already submitted the application to. when in reality im applying to gw penn state and american maybe bucknell

RatedPG, unfortunately I am from an over represented state, viz., Massachusetts.
I applied to UMass Amherst.

EA app is sent! :D collegebound07, you sent yours in a month ago? What is the opposite of procrastinate?? The NEU website gives some detailed info on their merit scholarships. Some full ride awards for the top 1% and 2% of their accepted students. One that really surprised me is a full tuition room and board scholarship for student(s) who might otherwise not even be accepted. Seems a little odd.

I basically had app drafts ready in the summer for a bunch of colleges.. I spent a lot of time in summer polishing everything (essay, etc). I had to wait for the school to start for getting recs and transcripts and then quickly sent things off so that I can concentrate on my senior year stuff and part-time job.

NJRes, what is the full tuition, room and board for students who might not otherwise be accepted? Where did you see that.?

RatedPG: see NEU's scholarship page:

http://www.financialaid.neu.edu/generated.php?page=70

I think NJRes was referring to the following:

Torch Scholarship-Full Tuition
Eligibility Criteria

Applicants who are nominated by an educational professional, such as a guidance counselor, are considered. Candidates will have faced significant personal, educational, and/or socioeconomic disadvantages or hardships which kept them from reaching their full academic potential. Torch Scholars are students who may not qualify for admission based on past academic performance but who clearly demonstrate other personal qualities indicative of their ability to succeed at Northeastern. The Program includes a Summer Immersion Program prior to freshman year.
Award Amount
Full tuition, campus room and board (double occupancy and 15 meal plan) during academic semesters.

^^^ This is extraordinary.
I have a feeling that NEU is going to be one school that will climb the charts in the years to come. I hope I will get good news from there.

^

We sent out another 24 acceptance letters today, you just might be one of them :)

Good luck.

oh my goodness, when do we find out? wow, yeah thats one of the reasons why i applied to neu is cus its an up and coming school which seems so exciting!

By "we", I meant "I"...

I'm a current student at NEU doing a work-study for the admissions office.

I see, how exciting! You must be very busy over there. Thanks for the clarification.

Busy is an understatement...the other day I overheard someone say that we received around 8,500 EA apps so far. (if i remember correctly)

I don't think that number includes all of the mail we're going to be getting the next couple of days (since people are sending stuff in right before the deadline)...so that number may increase, possibly by a significant amount.

That is a significant increase. If I remember correctly last year when my son applied EA the number was 6,500.

I remember reading somewhere earlier in the year that they expected over 8000 EA this year and close to 30,000 regular? Hopefully they are staffed up enough to handle it all. They certainly are on their way to meeting their goals to increase selectivity and academic rankings though, which is great if they also continue to provide the co-op/experiential learning opportunities that they are famous for.

scansmom, I agree. I also think that awarding generous merit aid is behind this, b/c it is making NEU a real option for some middle class families. I think that NEU is a very good college choice, and its location is fabulous.

All the more reason it is DD's top choice! This is exciting, but also very nerve-wracking.
