I was wondering how strict the 500 word count limit is for the essay. I just finished writing it and it is at 596. After reading through a few more times I haven't been able to find anything to get rid of. Would this be negatively looked upon if I am over or is it not a big deal?

Here't the deal. Until recently, you could just mail or email the essay separately, and the instructions "suggested" 500 words, but really only "required" a one page essay. D worked on hers during the summer, and got to around 570 and felt she could not get it any lower. Then, after the new application went live, the essay portal was an option, but the website and admission indicated the email was still also an option. Over the next few weeks, the info on the website changed to pretty much say 500 word max, and the essay portal is definately 500 max. It does not cut it off, rather it will not let you send if over 500 words. The email address to send the essay is no longer on the website, and in a call to admissions, it sounded like the 500 words or less is now a requirement; and that if emailed, the first 500 words might just be input into the portal by FSU if you choose not to edit.

I did not call for the info (trying not to hover), but this is apparantly what D got out of the call to admissions. IT was enough for her to pare it down to 499.

hmm thanks. looks like ill have to cut it down somehow.

My D had a lot of trouble with the website. She did get her essay down to 500 words exactly but could not get the website to accept/send it. She cut/paste it into an email to fsu admissions (and, to the webmaster too per their request so they could figure out what went wrong...this was a month ago, when the application was first posted). Now, I am wondering if she should also call them and make sure that her essay was really received (as opposed to lost in cyberspace). The application status page doesn't list the essay on it at all so how would we know if they didn't get it?

The essay portal is working a bit differently now than when D was practicing with it a few weeks ago. You can always try now to cut and paste and send. It does not indent, so just double space between paragraphs, cut and paste and submit. You then get the review page and can send. Wouldn't hurt to send twice. Just a suggestion. If its word count is over 500 it will say so with the word count it comes up with.

I would call and confirm receipt.

Why take the chance?

LGY - I think it is important to stay within the 500 word limit to indicate
you can follow directions, and have the ability to edit your work.

Yanks won a big one last night, Jeter picks his spots, it is the stuff that legends are written about. Lets hope they handle Balt tonight and Cleveland provides some competition for the Tigers.

I agree Lets go Yankees!
