Essay Question

I always heard it was better if your college essay was written in :the first person". My son has been working with his English teacher on revising his essay. I only looked at it for the first time today and was surprised to see it was written " in the third person"

ie In writing about himself he wrote "He did not know he would......"
instead of writing " I did not know I would...."

Should I be concerned? I was a little surprised his teacher did not address this.

First person for sure. Its a personal statement, about you by you.
An exception could be if speaking in third person adds something really special to the essay, other than it just being in third person.
If changing it to first person doesnt change the content/ meaning, do it!

When I readthe whole essay it made more sense. When I questioned my s about his choice he said it was a creative risk he was willing to take. (Which made me smile…just like him to say that) Anyway time will tell…
