I'm finishing up my FSU application, and I only need to submit the essay. Can I just use my common app essay which is about a significant event that "made me stronger". Also my essay is 730 words, and FSU says the essay should only be 500 words. I feel like I am overly qualified for FSU and am just applying there as a safety (not trying to sound pompous or anything) so I really don't want to write another essay. What should I do? Thanks

Would I be rejected for something like this?

With a safety school it is smart to play it safe. I’d cut the essay back to 500 words by leaving out the stuff in your essay about you being overly qualified for FSU. You could be rejected by FSU for not following application instructions.

When you submit the essay, it used to only take the first 500 words, so I would edit and take a few sentences to make it sound like you wrote it for FSU and did not just use something else. Otherwise, 500 words of a 750 word sentence would be incomplete.
