Essay questions (SFS and general)

For the SFS essay question about a current global issue, do they want something very specific, or would it be okay to write about something like furthering human rights while still respecting and preserving cultures which don't necessarily respect them or have different ideas about them (stuff like child marriages, the role of women in the middle east, etc.). I'm really interested in the interplay of culture, international relations, and human rights, so I think I'd be able to write a good essay if I worked hard enough, but my idea isn't as concrete as something like Darfur or the war in Iraq, so I was wondering what you all thought.

Also, I'm considering writing one of my other essays (the personal statement type one) about traveling to Kenya and Egypt the summer before sophomore year, but I'm afraid that I'd come across as not diverse enough (I live in a small, middle-upper class, 96% white town in the mid-west) or that it would be too cliche?

Thanks.

You can really write either essay on w/e you want. The idea for the SFS essay sounds great. It certainly doesn't have to be specific. The other one can be about w/e you want. The travel idea does sound a little cliche to me, but if you feel you can make it interesting and stand out then go for it! Good luck! Don't forget to have fun senior year either.
