Are people better at making observations, discoveries, and decisions if they remain neutral and impartial?

A Chinese proverb "Beauty lies in the lover's eyes" says that no matter how intolerably ugly a woman is, her lover who is overwhelmed by love and passion, will always feel that she is the most charming lady in the world. Seemingly, this old saying only indicates that love makes people blind. On a deeper level, it hints a more profound truth: biased mind is more likely to make unjust judgements.

An old story in China "The Lost Axe" tells about a man who lost his axe. He suspected that the axe was stolen by his neighbor's son. He felt that - the way the lad walked, the expressions on his face and the tone of his voice - everything, betrayed that the boy had stolen the axe. The more the man observed, the more certain he was. Not long afterwards the man found his axe in his cellar. When he saw his neighbor's son again, nothing about the boy's behavior nor appearance seemed to suggest that he had stolen the axe. This story implies that how a prejudice view can affect our observations and decisions.

Judges and jurors who are trained to provide fair and impartial justice are better at making decisions than normal people by reducing the extraneous information provided by the brain based on generalizations, stereotypes and biases, taking a calm and dispassionate view and keeping up with the law. Normal people are more emotional and might be inclined to impose a much more sever punishment on a cold and ruthless killer who had killed his wife and dismembered her body parts, than on a helpless housewife who had endured year long family violence and finally couldn't bear and killed her husband. Even though in such two cases, both of them killed a person. By contrast, jurors who are professionally trained may charge the two murderers more even-handedly and reach a more equitable verdict.

Objectivity is really hard to be achieved by ordinary man or even by specialists like journalists and judges because it is quite impossible to be free from bias due to preconceived, profiting and emotional reasons. People can only be infinitely close to a completely neutral status, but can never attain absolute objective perspective. But still, people should try to set aside their partial opinions in order to make accurate observations, great discoveries and wise decisions.
