Curious: what do you guys think the best/worst score a 1.75 page long essay could get (reasonably)?

My friend's essay (from the last time he took the ACT) was just under two pages, and he received an 11.

Hmmm... to get even more specific, what if my fourth body paragraph was barely developed and my conclusion was simply a rehash of the entire essay (providing nothing insightful, connections, etc.)?

did you provide specific insight in your body paragraphs? any references to relevant outside events?

Procrastination, I think my essay length was just about the same length as yours. I'm assuming that quality counts more than quantity. I said that students should not be limited to one activity; I cited personal experiences, the chance for students to relieve stress and develop time management skills, etc. My conclusion paragraph was a rehash as well, as it always is, which then broadens to the real world....meaning i said stuff like, "allowing students to expand their academic interests only serves to contribute to society a driven and enthusiastic group of students."

I gave solid reasoning for the essay (the common ones most people used), but I didn't cite anything from history, literature or personal events etc.

I'm not sure what you mean, exactly.

Edit - I did a similar thing briguy, although I didn't use anything personal. Said it developed time management skills, allowed students to learn to be efficient and handle stressful situations for the real word to develop into successful adults, and just threw in like 3 sentences about it developing social skills. Also mentioned it vital in enriching learning, etc. Just a bunch of ideas. I thought my fourth paragraph was EXTREMELY weak, though. so...

are we supposed to cite outside resources?

Hmmm I thought it was good to add personal experiences to "back up" your info?

I tried to write in a purely academic voice... I'm just asking this question in general because it seems like length is extremely important in determining essay scores on the ACT. I really don't want to re-take the entire test if I'm not satisfied by just my essay score.

Length shouldn't matter. Look at essays rated 1 and 2. Though they're low scores, the second one got a higher score even though it was shorter.

^^ thats really sad that is actually what someone wrote! omg I feel sorry lol.

wow, whoever wrote the essay that scored a 1 really needs to rethink his/her writing skills...

The last time mine was 1.5 pages with not a good conclusion and I got an 11.

i remember for the feb. act, i wrote an intro and conclusion, and i had 3 body paragraphs, neatly organized with my argument in each one.. about 1.75 pages... and i got an 8... again.. i hope my essay yesterday got at least a 9 or 10

If the essays earning the ones and twos are real, I can safely that somehow, somewhere, an English teacher has committed suicide.

yeah, those essays were pretty terrible

what if i had 2 solid body paragraphs...would that be sufficient enough?

My essay was only 1.75 pages, but I feel I got everything in, and I'm expecting a pretty good score. I doubt they prize quantity over quality... but if they do, :@

I wrote 2.25 pages of the CRAPPIEST essay ever
I was so bummed out by the timing on the other sections, that i just went screw it and wrote huge !

Who got something about Extra curriculars?

everyone lol
