Essay struggles!

I've never had problems writing a paper before, no matter what the topic, format, or time limit was. But whenever I take a practice SAT, I recieve a poor grade on my essay. I always get around 44/49 on the multiple choice writing section, but when I get 3's and 4's out of 6 on my essay, my score goes down a great deal.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might raise my score to a 5 or a 6? Any specific skills that they look for that play a large role in determining you score? Any particular essay format that is easy to work with in the time your given? Any little things that the scorers like to see included?

Anything is appreciated, thanks a bunch! :)

Practice writing neatly/efficiently?

Maybe have like 4 old prompts that you've never seen before. Go through the 4 prompts with the given time limit and then go through the same 4 prompts with unlimited time. Compare each essay with the time limit and the one without the time limit? Only suggestions. :P
