Essay subject matter question

I have a good essay written that shows a lot of positive characteristics about me. It’s about an extra curricular that I’m in, however, it doesn’t really show ideas or issues I’m interested in. Do you think that part matters?

if it's something you love, that you've poured a lot of your soul into, then i definitely think it's a good topic to write about.

as long as your writing is sincere, and it is evident that you are passionate about that extra curricular, and if it shows a lot of positive aspects of your personality and ideals, go for it.

my favorite college essay i've written this year was about running....by writing about cross country and the like, i communicated qualities like dedication, drive, work ethic, team spirit, etc. plus the essay showed that i'm not concerned about society's standards, that my definition of success doesn't necessarily involve trophies or money or fame.....

anyway, you get the point. i say go for it.

the part i'm having trouble w/ is the "Why Brown?/academic interest essay"... i don't know what to put in such a small amount of space or how to format it. could you pm me yours so i could get an idea of what to do?

thanks and good luck to you!!

I agree with thru_hiker. If it shows what you're passionate about, then it'll be great.

thru_hiker, i don't really want to pm my essay, but creatively list why you want to go to brown. Say how it will help you in life and tie in your interests. Stress that Brown is the right place for you. I only wrote 2 paragraphs. Maybe you could do the first one, why Brown, and the second what your academic interests are, but tie them together. Use some adjectives too.

Brown's question is basically, "write about anything that matters to you." There's no topic whatsoever. You can write about anything at all, which is why I loved this for an essay "prompt".

The prompt is just meant to get you going. Including everything it mentions is definitely not a requirement. What you have written sounds a-ok.

It sounds perfect as is.

thanks for the responses

Similiar question.

I sent in supplemental materials along with my letters of recommendation..and in there, I included an essay I wrote for the common app that that wouldn't fit in the required online space, but is me in a nutshell (for some reason that phrase always bothers me, but it works here so screw it). I attached my picture to that one, and now I'm going to submit a different essay for the online portion.

I guess this may be an illegal move of sorts, but I feel like Brown's an unconventional place and am guessing-slash-hoping that the adcoms there aren't as uptight as they are elsewhere in the Ivy League.

If the one I'm sending online was a response to a question.. do you think I should include the question in there? Cause mine was one about values being tested.. and if I dont, I feel like it has the potential to confuse.

Can someone pass along their thoughts??

i would put a note at top that said what you were responding to. that's just my opinion though
