Essay supplement

hey duders,
i just finished my supplemental essay #1 (academic interests/progression) and it's around 200 words over the limit (ie pretty much double the length). Now I'm debating whether or not I should cut stuff out or make it my common app essay as it is kind of unique and not really dealing with my concieved major. Any words of advice?

Will cornell disregard me if I submit an overly long essay?

If it's TOO long, they might disregard it; but going slightly over the limit shouldn't be a problem. 200 seems like quite a bit, so if you really like it, I would recommend using it for your common app essay.

I agree, Tranorix. My Common App 500-word essay was basically an elaboration on the questions posed in the two Cornell essays. It was more in the form of a short story, but it contained plenty more facts about the "evolution of my academic interests".

thanks so much for your help. I elaborated on my essay a little bit to conform it to the Common App and now it's 535 words (much to my chagrin). So i think I may just fill the common app out by hand and send my essay along so that i dont have to cut out stuff to make it fit in the little text box on the common app website. does that sound too conniving or should i give it a go?

Haha, mine wasn't even close to that. The essay I personally used for the common application was a humor essay I'd written for English earlier which had virtually no relevance to anything.

Apropos, I would stress that the common app essay is the best way to be creative; so make sure you really do like this one.

The common app doesn't cut off your words. It says it will, but it doesn't. Check out your print preview; if the whole essay is there, I don't see a problem. Don't double space either.

double spacing?

are we supposed to double space for the supplement?

No, I don't think so. I believe they wanted both essays to fit on a single page, so I wouldn't double space.

speaking of the essay supplement....for the academic programs that i will utilize blah blah.. anyways im reaaally into math and science, and i wrote the first supplement about that. but i dont know about any good stuff for cornell... ive looked all over the site, and ive done my research. but i KNOW its good for math and science. any help would be appreciated!! im desperate. or you can im me at stencil712

My first supplemental essay question was 600 words. I could not shorten it or anything... it fit on a page. I figure that even if they skim it they will find out enough of the good stuff about me :o)

It also depends what school you're applying to. I went for Hotel (obviously) and they want to see as strong a focus as possible on the hospitality industry. Thus I wrote about a particular work experience, which was why it overlapped with my academic interests.

im applying to the school of arts and sciences... and i wrote about science in math in my academic interest, ive already had a bunhc of experience, i need expereience THERE but what
