Essay Topic advice?

Hi, I've been lurking on CC for a while and I decided to sign up to get some advice. I'm going to be applying to engineering schools and I was wondering if it would be fine to have my Common App essay not be about engineering, but about an event that changed who I am as a person. Would it be better to have the essay be engineering?

It’s whatever you think is a stronger topic for you. It would be good if you wrote about your life story and how it inspired you to be an engineer or something like that.

Thanks for the response :] Would it be bad if my main Common App Essay is irrelevant to my intended major?

I’d disagree with SonicCare. Don’t worry about writing an essay on “how it inspired you to be an engineer.” Colleges should know from the rest of your app what your career aspirations are. The common app essay is for them to get to know you on a personal level, not professional. It doesn’t matter if your essay doesn’t relate to your major (in fact, colleges often pay little attention to what you list as your “intended major” because majority of applicants end up changing their minds).

Write a strong essay that shows who you are.
