Essay Topic - Death Penalty

When writing essays for colleges, is it best to avoid controversial topics such as the death penalty, abortion, etc? Thanks.

well first of all, look up your college and see where it ranks among cons./lib. groups. second of all, i just said this to another poster, and this is just my personal opinion, im sure other people here will tell you different, but i would write about what you want to write. if its coming from the heart, and its something thats important to, write about it. ideally, the content shouldn't matter them anyway, it should be how you word it, i mean, if they're being totally objective about it, like they should be. so write about it, and if they reject you, then the school wasn't right for you.

Good luck :)

I think it is important to show colleges you are an an independent thinker so it wouldn't be a bad idea to display your personal beliefs.

the problem with these hot topics is that it is tough to be fresh. I think that most admissions officers will have heard yur argument before. The danger is also that you will convince them that abortion should be unrestricted, but they wont know anything about you except you dont like abortion.
