Essay Topic Maybe/Maybe Not Cliche?

Hi everyone so I know this has probably been asked before multiple times but I wanted to get new input anyways. I’m thinking about writing about being gay for one of the supplemental essay prompts for one of the school’s I’m planning on applying for. I don’t intend to write any sort of sob-story essay or even an essay revolving around the somewhat cliche (at least in my opinion), story around self-acceptance stuff. I’m planning on writing the essay on how the LGBT community has introduced me to new conflicts and human rights issues around the world (gay concentration camps in Chechnya, ISIS throwing gay people off buildings), and how I now intend to pursue that field fighting for human rights (not just LGBT) around the world. This should steer clear of the cliche essay prompt response on coming out and how being gay is hard right? All input is appreciated and I’d be more than happy to answer any questions or clarify anything if people could offer a frank and honest response. Thanks in advance!

You’re not on a bad track but these topics are incredibly charged. Be sure that the mention of them doesn’t diminish the presence of you in the essays.

Keep in mind that college essay readers are looking to get a sense of who you are as a person. Readers should finish the essay and think: “Hey, now I know something about who itrcollege17 really is.” Not: “Hey, I’ve just learned about an important social issue”.

I agree with @Otterma. A good litmus test is: if you cross out any references to LGBT or being gay, will the essay still be poignant and tell us about something crucial to your identity (i.e. your passion for human rights or your interest in politics)?

I’m not so sure.

The point of the essay is to show them that you would be a good addition to their campus, not to educate. I think your essay might be important reading, but might not fulfill your objective: to give them a reason to say yes to your application.

I think it’s hard to educate on a social issue and also show them about yourself in the 600 (or whatever the limit is) words.
