essay topic too risky?

Hello! So for my common app essay, I went into detail about my experience volunteering for my county’s domestic violence center. I tried to focus it on my personal experience as much as possible, but I’m worried it got a little too preachy/social-justice-y.

Is anyone willing to read it and check for that? Thanks!

If it’s preachy you’re not focusing on YOU enough. How did it change YOU? What impact did it have on YOU?

I’d assume it’s not just “I realized domestic violence is bad” because that’s not much of an essay. So why is it so important to YOU?

@bodangles that is what I did my best to focus on. would you mind taking a look at it?

Sure, send it over

awesome, thanks!! @bodangles

I have a similar question. I’m writing my essay on domestic violence that has happened between my parents. It’s been quite a few years since it happened, but I was wondering if it was too risky of a topic or if it was too far back to write about (I was five)

Does your essay give them a reason to say yes to your application? That’s the point of the essay. The topic is only a bad one if what you do with it does not give them that reason.
