Essay topics

Could you tell me the essay topics of Brown because I couldn’t find them in the site. Thanks.

Brown uses the CommonApp.

You can find the essays on commonapp.org.

Does it mean that all I have to do for my essays in these colleges which use the CommonApp is to write only one personal essay which is posted on the documents in the site and I could choose what topic to write about?

Yes you can write one essay and use it for colleges on the Common Ap.

BUT: many colleges, including Brown, have supplements that ask you to write several other essays. Brown has, I think, three additional essays. You need to download the supplements for all the schools you are applying to to see their supplements. If the supplemental essays overlap, you can use the same essay more than once.

Thanks for your response. I know that from this year the whole application is sent online. Are there any documents like certificates, documents showing work experience, awards that should be sent on post?

Supplements like art work or music tapes are mailed. Not the type of documents you are talking about.

I just looked at some of your other posts, Boyan. As an international needing aid, you are in a tough spot. You should focus your efforts on schools that are need blind for internationals and those that give merit to internationals. Standard advice for students needing financial aid is to not apply early decision – early action is OK, as is regular decision.

Your strength is in math. One thing you could do is contact some math professors at the schools you are interested in and start a dialog with them. They might be interested in seeing some of your work. If they are impressed, they might put in a word for you in admissions.

Are there universities in Bulgaria you can attend? Because it really is not easy to be accepted to an American university and get full aid. Every year on CC there are financially needy international students heartbroken because they did not get any acceptances.

well, first thanks for your comment. I am attending not only in the USA but also in the UK. I know that due to my scores I do not have much chance of getting in some great school but I have to try. Unfortunately here there is totaly NO information about the universities in the USA so it is really hard to search and understand which one is good at sth. Evenmore I also think that my big strenght is the math and should focus on it and I will do it definately. The problem is that I do not have great SAT score and I won’t have Science subject test for ED (don’t know about RD), because I took SAT II on 10th and I believe that I did the Math (I and II), but did not good at physics. Anyway there are no good universities in Bulgaria but I assume having a year off as a way to get a scholarship in the USA next year. Nevertheless, I am taking SAT I again in Nov and I will do my best to break 2200 which will give me some chances. I like your idea of talking with math professors because it is actually a great opportunity. Could you tell me some schools that are famous for their math faculcies and have some joint programs like Brown (Mathematics and Business Studies).

Why do you think that applying ED is not ok for students needing financial aid? Could you explain me because as I said there is no information about that things here and despite my research I could no know some small but important things about that.

Thanks again, I really appreciate your comment and will be glad if you answer my questions and give me some advices.

The problem with ED for students needing financial aid is that first, it means you cannot compare financial aid packages in deciding where to attend. Schools can vary widely in how much aid they give and how the packages are structured. One school may give you grants and another a lot of loans, for example. Second, if you are accepted ED you are committed to the school, and if the package is going to put you into huge debt, or you didn’t receive a lot of aid, you are stuck with either attending that school or trying to back out of the acceptance, which can limit the schools you can apply to RD.

If you search CC – particularly in the financial aid and parents forums, where very knowledgeable people post and give advice – you’ll find numerous threads on these topics. You also might consider making a post in the Parents Forum. A lot of what you need to know is on the Internet, and you need to search for it.

By the way, Brown does not have a “business” concentration. It does have a strong applied math department. I am not an expert in math, so I can’t give you advice – but I have seen several threads in the Parents Forum that discuss schools with strong math departments.
