So I feel especially stupid...I heard the proctor say "you can go on to the page 3 if necessary" and in my mind, I kept thinking we had three pages in total to write the essay but of course, the essay portion started on page 2. I was at the bottom of page 3, just finishing up my second example and I turn the page over and realize there isn't any space left! There was still 5 minutes left but I didn't think I could erase, rewrite/cut down, and write a conclusion in that time.

Ughhh, am I screwed now? Anyone know if essays are especially harshly graded without conclusions...on my previous SATs I got a 10 and a 11 on the essay, I don't want colleges to be like "she went from that to an...7/8?!" Plus, writing's my strong suit so now I just feel foolish for writing so much for my two examples.

Sorry to be so freaked out and anxious--I just felt really got about this SAT overall and I don't want to be screwed over by the essay. I'm a senior so this is my last chance.

Any input?

(Also, if it helps, I ended each of my examples with a sentence that summed up the overarching point of my essay)

High five!! That's the same as me! Except in my case I didn't write quality examples, I just scribbled down made up stories because I didn't organize my time well.

Honestly I remember hearing that the conclusion is important, but I know that in the AP exam if you don't finish an essay they take into consideration only how much you have written down. I think it will be somewhat similar for the SAT.

My younger son got a seven when he took the SAT in 8th grade. He had no examples at all, just a nicely written intro. Older son got a nine with a standard five paragraph essay with no major issues. So who knows. Most colleges will take the best score from each section (U. of CA being a notable exception), so I doubt you are screwed. Colleges know that the essay scoring is highly variable and some students may be stymied by particular essay topics.

I sort of did that. The first time I took the SAT I got an 11, and then the second time I basically forgot about the essay section (never one for test prep). I didn't really have a conclusion, at all, and I got an 8. However, I still got into my top 2 schools of choice. I'm pretty sure that they know what testing is like, and will focus the most on your best scores.

7s and 8s are reserved for well-written, although trite, essays. I say this because my examples sucked, but my grammar and diction were, I think, pretty good.

How you people manage to fill up all that space in the allotted time, I have no idea.

If you are a strong writer as you have shown in your first three paragraphs, a missing conclusion is not a big problem because that is what my writing teacher, who also qualifies for an essay-reader, told me. You MAY still score above a 10.

I thought we had more space also, so I wrote a lot of examples then realized that I had no space left. I wrote a 2 sentence conclusion (partly out of the margins) and still pulled off a 9, so you might be ok.

Hmm...okay, thanks for the input, guys! I would've gone onto the margins but my proctor was very specific about how writing in the margins would not be read (which probably isn't even true lol). Oh well, I guess I'll just have to wait and see now...

My APUSH teacher tells me people can score just as high as others even when missing conclusions. The Introduction needs to be solid and full of detail, and followed by the body which supports it and proves the thesis stated in the Introduction. A conclusion just ties it all together. It's important in some cases, but it won't be a determining factor if the rest of your essay is up to par.

I almost forgot, my APUSH teacher also told me that she'd seen essays that were ONLY Introductions score decent before. xD

sounds so complicated. Did anyone try that 18-min drill thingy on the other post..? need some feedback.. and where can I find people to grade it..? I had a private tutor that used to grade it for me.. but.. he is not around right now...

D made an 800 on the writing section with an unfinished essay so you are not screwed at all. She made a perfect score on the multiple choice section (80) and a 9 on the essay. Friend of hers also didn't finish the essay and made an 800. I don't know the score breakdown for the friend - but the end result was an 800.
