<p>A 1,000+ word essay is a flagrant violation of the Common App limit as well. </p>

<p>It is intended for both.</p>
<p>My common app essay was 760 words and I was accepted, so it is not a strict limit. However, make sure every single one of those words is necessary.</p>

<p>Mine was around 800, I kept to the limits on the Yale ones though.</p>

<p>How firm is Yale about their 500 word limit for the supplemental essay? Mines at 531 and I like it at where it is.</p>
