Prompt: Do people accomplish more when they are allowed to do things in their own way? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.
My computer science teacher always told the class” Every one of your programs should be different so you shouldn’t be concerned if your partner’s program is different than yours.” To me that statement means that everyone has their own way of accomplishing task. No doubt that you should listen and heed to other people’s opinions or guidance but I believe that performing a task through your own methods is the only way to grow and benefit as an individual.
One of the best examples to illustrate this thought is through my studies of calculus. During the beginning of this rigorous AP class, my parents always told me to master the course by exercising my studies through completing pages of problems found in the book. Throughout the first week, I persisted and followed the will of my parents. As time went on, calculus became increasingly difficult. As a result, this led to me sitting at my desk, pouring through my book, contemplating on how to complete these convoluted dilemmas. It became more and more stressful each night and during the middle of the semester, I decided that I couldn’t take it anymore. I was losing focus and couldn’t work as efficiently as I would have liked to. Homework that was supposed to take an hour to complete, instead took me about four hours to do. I was tired and stressed each day and my grades were depreciating very quickly. Because of this I decided to take an alternate method to my learning, forming a path that was different from my parent’s ideal way of learning. Instead of putting in long hours into my calculus exercises, I would focus completely for about forty five minutes on understanding the concepts and then take a fifteen minute rest break before completing the problems. This method worked and completely changed me. Now instead of feeling stressed and tired, I feel active and accomplished. My grades have improved and I have more time to do the things that I want to do. Through this personal experience, I learned that doing work using your own method can accomplish more than doing work just using somebody else’s method.
Learning through other people’s methods is important but I believe that that doing something your own way can be more effective than doing something only using another person’s way. As Watson once said “There is more than one way of doing good science.” I agree with this statement and I think that there is also more than one way to do work. Undertaking tasks using your own methods lets your personality shine through your work. Therefore, I believe that people accomplish more when they are allowed to do things their own way.
