One of the essay prompts for UMich is

** Discuss an issue of local, national, or international concern. Why is this issue important to you? How do you think it should be addressed?

I wrote a first draft, and it's about terrorism. While there are people who say my essay is pretty good, there are also those who say that terrorism will be a topic that will be overused. What should I do?

if it is well written, it does not matter. originality is important and you shouldnt write what everyone else is writing, but how are you supposed to know what everyone is writing about? IMO, as long as you tie it to yourself and make it meaningful and personal it should be fine.

avoid big topics like "terrorism" or "world peace." Try to come up with something "small," something you've experienced before.

just write it in a different tone.

instead of being like "September 11th was influential.. blahblahblah"

use imagery. in your introduction, maybe try to describe it in a way it is not usually described, so the admis off. may think ur going toward a different topic.
