Essay

Has anyone ever written their essay over the limit NYU provides? Are they leniant with the word count?

i think if you are 50 words or so over you will be fine

I believe that they are, but it depends on how far you go over. However, the exception is if you write an extraordinary essay that can't be truncated to maintain it's effect. I wrote my essay like this, except that it wasn't extraordinary in a good way, just a queer way. It was also far below the word count and if I truncated even further, there wouldn't be anything left of it.

As I wrote in another message board, I would advise you to keep your essay within the word limits simply because the college asked you to do so. In this day and age where admissions can be so competitive, there's absolutely no reason to give the adcom another reason to toss your application aside. I'm not on an adcom, so I can't give you a specific example, but it would be pretty terrible for your application to be dropped in favor of another candidate's because you didn't follow directions and that person did.

Having survived college apps and now applying to medical school, I personally wouldn't dare going over the limit. I don't think anyone on an adcom has time to sit and count your words, but I'm not willing to risk the chance that they do, given the electronic nature of applications nowadays. Rules are rules - if a school didn't think you could give a good answer in however many words they ask for, then they wouldn't ask for that word limit. In short, follow directions when asking for admission - that's my feeling on it.

The word-limit for the NYU Undergraduate Admissions application essay is a general suggestion. Our Committee simply does not have the time to count words in an essay and, more importantly, we would prefer that a student go over the limit if they feel that is what is necessary to properly convey their thoughts to us. Our Committee would never make an admissions decision that was based on the total number of words in a students essay.

That being said, we encourage students to make sure their essay is no longer then 2 or 3 typed, double-spaced, pages.
