Hi guys, I'm working on my essays for my application and I was just wondering if I could get a little bit of advice...
I've done my common app essay, and it has a pretty formal tone to it... now looking at the Chicago supplement essay it seems like my formal tone won't really work. I feel like I'll have to take a more quirky or theoretical tone with that one.. so, would that inconsistency be ok? I'm also afraid of taking the risk of having that type of a quirky essay for the common app essay. I know UChicago appreciates it, but I dunno about some of the other schools I'm applying to off the common app.... If anyone can offer me a little guidance, that'd be great... I know I should pick a tone that sounds like me the most, but I'm really confused on what to do with these essays haha, they're so unusual...

I think one reason they’re so crazy is so people will be caught so off guard that they’ll have to resort to the tone, the content, that is most comfortable to them. My advice would be to not worry about “taking a tone” and just write, then see how it turns out. As for the inconsistency, no worries. My common app essay was a fiery attack of education policy and my Chicago essay was a narrative about me walking down a street. Just write, and eventually you’ll stumble upon what feels right.
