Essays, essays, essays

For those of you applying to Penn using the Common App, I have a question. Is it correct that we only do the essays in the supplement, not a general Common App personal statement as well?

Does Penn want (1) Common App personal statement, (2) “Why Penn” and (3) Autobiography/first experience/risk taking essay? Or just (2) and (3)?

On some colleges’ supplements I don’t really understand if their essays REPLACE the common app essay or are in addition to.

Thanks so much, and good luck to everyone applying this fall!

Go to commonapp.org and see for yourself. It explains on the website which essays are standard. Penn has the supplament on their website.

You have to do the common app essay plus whatever individual schools have on their supplements.

...but if you apply with Penn's own application they only require the essays on Form 1B. It doesn't seem likely that some applicants are doing an extra personal statement just because they use the Common App.

And I'm almost sure I recall Penn saying at their info session that they require TWO essays. Does anyone else know?

If you check out the Penn supplement the Why Penn essay is required while the other one is optional. Don't know about the common app itself.

chances are if you're doing the common app you'll have to write the common app personal statement at some point anyway. so just do it and let them decide if they want to look at that as well.

Common app personal statement and why penn is required. Autobiography one is OPTIONAL.
