My MIT essay is that due to the countries that I’ve lived in, and my family background, and one particular experience, I want to do something to improve the environment (the question is: tell us about your world and how it has affected your dreams/ambitions).
caltech asks “what event(s) have shaped your life”
if i write “having lived in these countries and experienced this bla bla…, my life has been shaped in that i am passionate about preserving the environment”… will caltech get ****ed off if they suspect that i just slightly modified my MIT essay for them?

No idea man - I'm doing a whole different essay for caltech. I would suggest you rewrite it but use the "brilliant" ideas you used in MIT's essay.

just mod it. since most deadlines are within days, i don't think you could write another quality essay that quickly

plus after thousands of applications, all the essays begin 2 look the same. they won't really think too much about if you changed it from another school

I think the quality of the essay (and not putting the adcoms to sleep) is what is important. If you can make your existing essay work by, say, altering the first and last paragraphs, that is probably the approach to take with the deadlines at hand.
