Essays

@circlemidnight,
I’d guess… 500 words? But idk if someone else knows they can say.

Mine is 614. But I’m honestly a little scared that it should actually be longer because I didn’t fill up the space provided AND there is a whole other section if more room is needed…

Haha the hotchkiss school essays can’t be any more than 500 words and I only have 201 words (:

Whoa… When did you guys take the SSAT?? I’m so behind, trust me…

@scales1994 they said it’s good to give enough detail to support your viewpoint but not too little or to much.

^could’nt agree more with SnapePotter, quality of words over quantity of words

SSATfreak: I haven’t taken mine yet, but it’s scheduled for December 11. If you haven’t scheduled yours yet, I would suggest you do so soon, or you’ll only have the January one.

Hey guys, I have a question, if you do great on the SSAT but have average essays and little ECs because of financial situation, could you still get in? Im also URM if that helps me…

heps1996-
I have the test scheduled in December, but I haven’t handed out any of the reccomendations. I haven’t started on any of the essays… Uh-oh…

What percentile are you shooting for on the SSAT?

SSATfreak- I’m shooting for 85 minimum and 90+ ideal. We’ll see how that goes
I haven’t done recs either, but essays are in progress. Still haven’t decided whether or not to add Lawrenceville, Groton, and/or Exeter to my list, and I’ve only had one interview so far-- plus PA and DA interviews remain unscheduled… ahhh

Really? I’m trying for an average of about 93…what is the ideal grade for an FA candidate?

heps1996- Don’t worry…I’m WAAAAY behind. I haven’t scheduled ANY interviews or started on ANY on my essays… Applying to HADES, Taft, and Choate. I am such a procrastinator-not good. Am I seriously behind? HELP! Wait are the essays for every school different? Or are they similar? Sorry I haven’t started on them yet so I don’t know. I’m shooting for the same scores on the SSAT, but we’ll see how I’m going to on that. When should I hand out the recommendations at the latest?

circlemidnight-I wish I could score a 93 percentile on the SSAT, but that might not happen. I’m applying for FA, and I’m pretty sure that my SSAT scores are a bit low for that…although I haven’t took the test yet.

scales 1994- What’s a URM?

@angela: Yes, the essays are different for each school, but some are similar so I took one essay and tweaked it a little bit to make it work once for all the schools. You really should hand the recs out after Thanksgiving break at the latest so the teachers don’t have to spend all of their Christmas break scrambling to finish them. It’s just polite and gives the teachers ample time to complete them.

URM - underrepresented minority

@loubear- great advice! Thank you for telling me this!

@loubear- ^ Same as circlemidnight! Thanks!

I feel so behind…

I just took the SSAT’s (december), but i will probably need to retake in January… Is it possible to cancel or add score recipients after you find out your score? (i don’t think you can cancel, but if i happen to get a good score, can i add?)

Haven’t started on essays yet (I don’t know how to start! ARRGGHHH!!) but at least i’m only applying to 4 schools, so i don’t have to write too many essays…

Handed out recommendations but i’m not sure if my teachers have started on those yet…

Only had one interview, but I’m doing the rest in January (going to visit the schools)

okay i have a question about one thing. i like drawing, and i want to send some of my drawings to the schools i’m applying to… do you think i should mail them now, or bring them with me when i visit the schools + interview in january? Or perhaps do both?

Q:Is it possible to cancel or add score recipients after you find out your score? (i don’t think you can cancel, but if i happen to get a good score, can i add?)

A: Yeah, just go on to “manage my account” or something that sounds like that.

Vivsters, I don’t know the answer to that. I suggest you start a new thread, something like, “How do I submit artwork with my application?” It wouldn’t hurt to email or call the admissions departments at your schools with the question.

If you scanned your drawings, you could submit them to multiple schools–but I understand that some artwork needs to be seen in the flesh, so to speak.
