Does UT Austin care about essays?

I went to a Longhorn Monday session at which an admissions counselor said that they did.
I thought my essays were excellent and very unconventional, and yet I still got CAP'd?
My SAT scores weren't that high, but higher than the average for the College of Undergrad Studies, my ACT score was a 24, and I thought I had strong extracurricular activities. If anything, I thought my essays would really make me stand out from a lot of people.
I guess not.

Also, another question, is it possible for me to be able to transfer to UT for the Spring Semester of 2014? I took 3 classes over the summer last year which gave me 11 credit hours, and I also passed an English AP test with a 4. Could those hours go towards my 30 credit hours needed to transfer to UT? Could I take some classes over the summer and fall in order the get the rest of the credits?

Anywho, congrats to all those that got in.
I'm really happy for you guys :D
