For most of Columbia’s short answers, even though the questions do not ask much, the word count is 150 words. Are we expected to fill this up? Should I take advantage of the opportunity to expand on some of my choices? Will it look bad if I only use about 50/150 characters for most of them? (because that’s what it’s at now, given just the listing part)

You don’t have to fill it up, just write an honest answer to the questions - make sure the focus is on YOU. If you can be brief, great, but if you need to fill it up, they are short enough that the readers won’t be bothered. If it is enough to answer the question, and show something about how you think and write, you’ve done your job.
