essays?

would harvard appreciate a humorous/quirky essay? which ivies and other top colleges would/wouldn't?

I'm pretty sure ALL colleges would appreciate a tastefully portrayed humorous essay. But "humorous" and "quirky" can both be taken in very odd directions. Be careful. What topic are you thinking of specifically?

I have another Harvard essay question - I received the app in the mail and I thought someone had said Harvard had 7 essays or something...like the ones in the Summer School app, you know, favorite book you read in the past year and stuff like that. But between the Common App and the Harvard Supplement there was just the extracurricular statement, personal statement, and 1 optional additional essay. So did they change it or am I missing something?

No...there's not 7 essays. You're right with the second count.

The Barron's essay book said that Harvard was notorious for its 7 essays. And the Summer School app had them. Weird...

How many essays can you write? Only the 1 optional? Is there a word limit?

yes, although it is flexible, adcoms don't appreciate it when you go over that much. harvard suggests for one supplementary essay.

common app. essay + harv supp = 2 essays grand total

i called the admissions office at harv before and asked the same ques, if we can write more than 1 supp. they said that you COULD but 2 is really enough and preferable.

2nd essay is only suggested if you feel you can reveal more about yourself than w just one. Might be actually more impressive if you can manage to reveal as much of yourself in 1 essay as most ppl do in 2.
