Essays?

ok so i'm from england...here when applying to uni you basically write one personal statement - which is basically where you enthuse over the subject you are applying for, and mention any impressive ECs you may have (there isn't anywhere else on the application form to mention ECs), and you get 4000 characters.

but american essays seem very different, and i can't seem to find a thread on this topic. it seems much more abstract - i was wondering if some people could clarify what exactly one should be doing with their essays? i'm foreign, and dumb. cheers.

Usually for every school you have to send several essays, but they'll all ask a different questions (though some may ask the same, and some essays can be used for different schools).

Some might ask you why you think you would be a good addition to their school, what is something you have done in your life that you are proud of, etc.

It's not really a personal statement, though you can use elements that you would write in there in a college essay for the States.
