ive already written all my essays for wake (babysitting=a lot of free time) except for 2..and they're KILLING me. Describe a character in literature who I'm like? I read A LOT of books, but it's not everyday that I read a book and think hm thats me reincarnated. Any suggestions on how to find a character who i can relate to?
Also, I have absolutely no opinion on who the greatest intellect of our time is. What is "our time" anyway? ehhh help

after a discussion with shaffer144, we have decided to advise you on what not to do.

"i am like jesus from the bible because i'm smart, people like me, and if i don't get in you'll go to hell."

"big brother from 1984 reminds me of myself because i am watching you through your tv screen."

"i'm like dean moriarty from on the road because i'm a genius, crazy drug addict."

"old yeller because I will be loyal until rabies gets to me"

"garcin, inez, and estelle from no exit, because hell is me"

"alice, from go ask alice, because jefferson airplane has also used my life as innuendo for an acid trip"

"i'm like godot, because if you accept me, i still might not show up"

"Aslan because I can bring forest creatures back to life by breathing on them"

"Frodo Baggins, because i'm short and have hairy feet"

"Dr.Frankenstein becase I have passion for expirementing and creating new things"

"the narrator from the stranger because i kill people on the beach for no reason"

"lord voldemort, because... well, reject me and find out"

"the guy from notes from the underground because i am a sick man... i am a spiteful man"

"antoine roquentin, because people give me nausea."

"chief bromden from one flew over the cuckoo's nest, because i sometimes pretend to be deaf and mute so i don't have to talk to people."

sorry. i couldn't resist. but seriously, the most important thing is how you write it, not what you write about. one of my big essays was about a bruce springsteen song (i'm a sophomore at Wake now).

thanks :).. your response literally made me laugh out loud.

but yeah... im just a little overwhelmed with the essay topic. im thinking im just gonna think about a personality trait I wanna talk about ..and then find a character who also possesses that trait.

i had a lot of trouble with finding a person too, but its really your opinion they want. i ended up doing arthur rubenstein even though he already died before i was born.

i wrote bill gates. but then again, half the kids wrote bill gates.

the key is how you explain yourself. you can pick a name who everyone is going to write about but then come out with 3 stellar lines to write about him.

I went with Thomas Friedman. I don't actually believe that, but it got me in, so I'd go with him. Just talk about globalization. Then add some bs.

Hah. The Godot line is the best in there BY FAR. As for my application, I chose C.S. Lewis because of his perpetually challenging Oxford students to analyze situations and think critically and etc. etc. I dont' actually think he's the greatest intellect of our time ... but whatever it worked.

I think my answer to the "greatest intellect" was Albert Camus (if I remember correctly). It probably isn't historically correct but it's my personal opinion and I think I wrote an excellent little blurb about why.

Tips to finding a character... I'm assuming in your English class you look at characterization so you'd know their traits pretty well. Just try and make a list of your main character traits and try to compare. For me it's never hard to find a character I relate to and am similar to. I find them everywhere.
