How long can the essays be? I know it says 300 words, but can I exceed that amount by 50-100 words?

50-100 over is pushing it. That’s a noticeable amount. Ideally it’s 300 words.

I always wonder if they count the words and get mad if you go over. It specifically says 300 word max. I would follow the directions.

I heard one time from an admissions counselor, that they actually scan the essay and when they do they have a marker placed at the 300 word count. They said they will continue to read it passed 300 if it is to finish the sentence, but if it is still rambling they don’t.

Remember it is not one person reading the essay, it is a committee. 50-100 words is way too much. Go back and read it, I am sure there are at least that many words that would be considered fodder and not necessary for the essay.

do you people actually think the undergraduate admissions office of 10 people is going to read 30,000 essays?

All they do is put your grades and SAT score and if they’re not that strong then they might read your essays to consider you. That’s about it.

The essays for LEP are read, they can be your make or break from Honors to being the closest thing to one is living amongst honor students in the dorms.

There are a lot more people than 10 in admissions, if you notice you will be accepted by a certain school within the UMDCP umbrella…i.e. Behavioral Science, Engineering, Smith, Clark, etc. each one of these schools have their own dean. The engineering admissions does not make decisions on the journalist intended major. That is why they ask for intended major. Just as in the Honors, Gemstone and Scholars they have people reviewing for those students. Even on the UMD website they explain that those accepted for Gemstone also meet the honors committee to determine if they will be in both.

what about if it is over by like 20?

probably OK, mitzie.
