I've been looking at a few essays that people have written for their apps...they seem so intellectual and sophisticated. Does it need to be some deep, highly animated paper or can it be a straight-forward, simple writing from the heart. I want to talk about always being a motivated person but I read about people talking about their miraculous visit to Pompeii, St. Peter's, or the Louvre and the writing makes me feel like I'm reading some piece by Dickens...

haha well i dont have a right or wrong answer for this, but what i do know is that i got into CAS and my essay was nowhere near Dickens. I wrote (in very simple words) about how my parents divorce has made me a stronger more passionate person. TRUST ME it wasnt anything inspiring or intellectual AT ALL.

I was wondering the same thing about the essays. I just figured that if you're going to write about how something made you stronger, you should touch the judges with your story;make them feel it. It doesn't have to be over-written or falsely philosophical. Just write from your heart.

my essay was total crap.

yea mine was too

Whatever you do, try to make it memorable.

Does NYU give you a specific essay question or do you just write what you want?

its the one on the common app. but then they have several short answer things they want you to write, maybe 7-8 sentences each.

I actually felt like my essay went a really long way to getting me into NYU cuz of my GPA. I'm actually quite proud of it. hehe.

i heard that if you are doing the common app nyu pays a lot more attention to the short answers (because they are more specific and have a lot of room to show your personality)

What is the essay topic on the common app.?

All applicants have to answer NYU's short answer swction, so what does VanessaAnne mean when she says NYU pays more attention to the common app. The common app includes only one short answer question.

no with the common app you have to do the NYU supplement which has those short answer questions. im saying they dont pay as much attention to your long essay on the common app

Surprising I got into NYU because I applied 4 days late---I was like, "HMM NY, What the heck?" I did the commonapp--and for the supplemental questions, make sure to check out the NYU page and talk indepth about their specific programs that you want to participate in.............But in the end, I'm going to BU instead

Why is the common app long essay less important than the regular NYU long essay?

the common app long essay is open topic (meaning you can write about whatever you want) they have a bunchof topics you can choose from, but the last option is "your choice" so basically that means you can write about whatever you want.
