Is anyone planning to attend?

I’ll be attending :)

Although I’m not sure if I’ll be attending Emory. I really hope I’ll be able to go because the courses offered are AMAZING! I like the diversity of the curriculum a lot more than UGA’s. The only problem is the cost.

Here’s a pdf discussing Essence of Emory:

http://www.emory.edu/admission/admission/decisions/essence_invite.pdf

The program seems to be very…chill? Like theres a BBQ and a Salsa Lesson? Hahaha so I don’t think the program will reflect Emory’s student life too accurately. Most of it will probably be staged.

I’ll be going, too! I’m so excited ‘cause I was forced to live in the dead city of Orlando. But Emory in Atlanta? Oh yeah, things are gonna be poppin’ regardless of how ‘staged’ it is. Time away from home is pure bliss :)

Will def be going. I think it will be a blast! Can’t wait!!

See, I’m going, but I hate the fact that I have to miss two days of school for this. Maybe my flight will be later on, so it’ll just be Friday. Our school excuses two days for college visits.

@Coolpg Yeah; I asked and was told that they would be having a BBQ, so you can bring a swimsuit. I assume there’s a pool nearby. I don’t swim. At all.
Wel will get to tour the school, meet teachers and faculty, and even listen in on a lecture. Hope everything goes well.

funtertaining,

I’m sorry you have to miss out on some school days (it’s a pain trying to make up work…especially tests!). But at least it’s not cutting into your Spring Break time (it is mine)! Haha the Sunday we return is the day before school starts again. BLEH!

I think it should be fun! I know I’ll enjoy being able to listen to the discussions and everything and I’m also not too great at swimming (but they said this part was optional). As far as the BBQ is concerned, I’m a vegetarian. :D

Hahaha! Whatever! In any case, I’m sure we’ll all enjoy it :)

I wish I could go! But I’m already two days out of this week and I can’t do that again. Also, physically getting there would be a hassle! Hopefully, there’s some sort of other accepted students day.

@coolpg and funtertaining,
I am probably as anxious as y’all are at what to expect during the program. I will miss two days of school as well (and my school only allows two days for college visits also), so I am really hoping that it will be well worth the two missed days!! I can’t (and won’t) swim either, so I will probably just chill on the side? I really do not know what to expect. I mean, I know about the agenda of the program, I just don’t know what the students will do during downtime (if there will be any)…

But nonetheless, I am really hoping that it will be fun and engaging and verify (once again) that Emory may be for me. What do y’all hope to see/experience/get from the Essence program?

The swimming is definitely optional we just kind of mentioned the bathing suit because the barbecue (which will have Boca burgers for the vegetarians like myself out there :] )is at the Clairmont campus [url=<a href=“Welcome to Emory College.”>Welcome to Emory College.]Housing & Facilities | Summer School | Emory College | Atlanta, GA/url. I’d say Essence might be a little more… activity filled compared to our normal weekends here. Other than that it’s a pretty accurate depiction of how we live here… minus the tons of work hahaha.

Great!! I’m up for some barbecue! Will we be pretty much independent during the week (except for the planned activities like the barbecue) for things like class visits? In other words, will we have to handle our own timing and stuff on that? Thanks.

Yeah pretty much the whole weekend is handling your own timing. For class visits they give you a list of classes you can sit in on and you choose. MWF classes are only 50 minutes. In my opinion we had the perfect amount of free time, enough to just explore campus and see what life at Emory was like, but not enough time where we were bored.

Okay. So do we also get a list of events and where to meet up for them, like for the BBQ or the showcase, etc.? Thanks!

Yep, it’s included in the packet emailed to you I believe The showcase (showtime i think it’s called) is going to be awesomeeeee make sure you go to that!! All of my friends are in BAM or Ngambika (Boys/Girls step teams) and they have been working so hard and practicing non stop.

Essence introduces you to a bunch of upperclassmen before joining all of us on campus!! First glimpse of dorms, classes, professors, and new friends! You even find out about CROSSROADSSSS!!! ([Emory Crossroads Retreat](http://www.emorycrossroads.com)) This is a multi-cultural pre-orientation retreat for freshmen that is sure to be A LOT OF FUN. Check out the website! Come to Essence! You’ll fall in love with Emory :)

Great!! Thanks Melanie…I did not get an email about the events for the program but I did get my itinerary and checklist and stuff…should I expect it later on?

@tweetz, thanks, I can’t wait! You make it sound like I am already supposed to be attending Emory now (which I sincerely hope so…). Now all we have to do is convince my parents which I think they are close to being convinced…they are just hoping for a better financial package!!! Wish me luck!!!

Sincerely,
A future moocher!!! LOLz jk

Will we be residing in dorms with current students? Also, do you think bringing a laptop would be okay? (If so, is there wireless access?)
Thanks!

I brought my laptop to essence last year it was just a waste of space in my suitcase. 1) because they’re so many activities that you can go to that you won’t be worrying about being on a computer unless you have work of course and 2) because the EmoryGuest wifi network doesn’t work in the dorms. Hope that helps!

Does anyone know if they provide sheets? Because all it says is to bring a comforter and I don’t have much space in my suitcase! HELP!
