I’ve been working with a student who returned to school after taking a long break. He should graduate either during the summer term or next fall since the remainder of his courses are offered online.
He had in-state tuition when he first entered college in 2009 since he was a dependent and his parents lived in state. He’s an independent student (over 24) and took the fall semester off to pursue a job opportunity. He moved to a neighboring state for this job back in September - does the move jeopardize his in state tuition?
It doesn’t matter what any of us say- what matters is what his U says. They will have a policy and it will spell out what consittutes in-state, out of state, how an online semester is billed based on domicile.
Good luck.
I would think that this is really school specific. Without knowing the school, I don’t think anyone here can help you. The student should check with the school for the most authoritative information.

He contacted the bursar but their response was very unhelpful - he was emailed a link to their page on in state tuition and Virginia’s domicile page (http://www.schev.edu/students/vadomicileinfo.asp). I read through it a few times but could only find info about establishing residency, not what happens if you move as an independent. I’ll tell him to try and get more specific info.
From what I know, he has not established domicile in the state he lives in now. His adviser is pushing him to register ASAP but he doesn’t want to do until he knows the tuition situation.
Based on the below wording I think it will be tough to say he is still a resident:
He should get a reading from the Bursar before he re-enrolls.
