If you took Latin in high school, and don’t wish to focus on a foreign language in college, how, in the world of covid, do you establish proficiency so that you can opt out of the language requirements? The way my S had planned to do so was with the SAT subject test, but it was canceled. He did not take the AP class because he just didn’t have a passion for it. But, he has taken 4 years of Latin. Has anyone run into a similar issue? And if so, how did you resolve?
Most colleges have placement tests for foreign language.
Ah, so once you get there, you take the test… Thanks!
Yup
In schools without placement tests (especially with Latin), emailing the undergraduate advisor or department chair is probably the way to go.
If he is looking to satisfy a college requirement with HS work, it is likely very school dependent.
Agreed - check individual schools for both language requirements and ways to meet them.
Many schools/majors (my recently graduated daughter’s for one, mine for another) have no FL requirement.
Testing is about the only other way I can think to demonstrate proficiency.
(CLEP, often the other option, does not offer Latin)
If the college offers Latin, then the department probably has a placement procedure (test or otherwise). A high enough placement may be allowed to fulfill the college foreign language requirement, or allow doing so with only one course.
However, if the college does not offer Latin, that may be more difficult to do with respect to the college’s foreign language requirement.
Can he take the AP test anyway? Perhaps he may not get as high a score compared to taking it after taking the AP level course, but he may be able to get a score that is high enough for some colleges’ foreign language requirements.
Possibly - but at that point it would be nearly 2 years from when he stopped taking Latin. Thanks all for the input!
