Hello, I wasn't sure where to put this question, so I thought I would just put it here. I am currently a NJ resident, but my mom said that if I get accepted to UCB or UCLA she might be willing to move to California (for tuition purposes and other factors like the nice weather :) - she really likes it over there).

My question is, if she were to move there before I started college (say in July/August 2014) would I qualify for in-state tuition for the next year, 2015? I know I wouldn't qualify for freshman year, but how about sophomore or junior year? I tried searching it up, but I was still a bit confused. I would appreciate any help on this.

You have to be living in California for one year BEFORE you start school here, so from what I understand, it’s already too late. You could do this yourself after one year, but you’d have to be financially independent from your parents (which I’m sure you can’t do, right?)

I think it means you won’t be considered for all 4 years (unless the student is financially independent), or at least that’s what their site makes it sound like. I would call the registrar and ask them specifically.

Read the website, there are no promises but it looks like if you and Mom BOTH move to CA BEFORE you start college and get drivers licenses and car registrations and voter registrations in CA IMMEDIATELY and before you start college, etc, assuming she is the parent you are dependent upon for tuition purposes… it could work, for year TWO on, not for year one’s tuition. But look carefully at the web page. Come on, you are applying to Berkeley and UCLA, you can read the web page, and you had better because I think others are reading incorrectly, myself.
