My parents and I just ran Wellesley's net price calculator. I would really like to apply ED, but need significant financial aid. According to the estimate we were given, it would be affordable. I'm not sure how accurate is the net price calculator is though.

How did your estimates compare to your actual FA package? Would it be a bad idea to apply ED?

Wellesley is need blind for US citizens and permanent residents, so as long as the admissions is willing to accept you, you will receive FA calculated according to your FAFSA profile. So if your data in the FA calculator is accurate, the result can be really close to the actual amount of FA.

Sarahchristine, the net price calculator will give you a good ballpark estimate of “expected family contribution” plus what you might be able to anticipate in a financial aid package. We found it to be a very close approximation of what was ultimately offered to my daughter. In fact, the package ended up being a bit more than what the net price calculator yielded. But keep in mind that this is just one family’s experience and everyone’s financial situation is unique.

I would amend that to “calculated according to their institutional methodology.” Wellesley does not rely on the EFC calculated by the FAFSA. Perhaps you meant CSS PROFILE, which Wellesley requires in addition to the FAFSA?

My experience is that W is very good with aid. I have a very strange situation and FAFSA EFC was 100%, but CSS profile is used to determine what W will grant you and there you have room to explain in further detail. The FA office is very helpful and friendly.

I used Wellesley’s NPC through college board. The net price result looks good for my D to apply. However, Harvard’s NPC gave full price tag. (No aid because of my family cincome.) How Wellesley’s net price is better than Harvards considering the amount of school endowment ? Did Wellesley include a merit-based scholarship in the NPC ?

There is a a new calculator, InTuition, on the Wellesley website. It asks only a few questions and provides a range in addition to a suggested figure for EFC.

“Wellesley doesn’t give merit scholarships.”
That is my understanding when we visited there.
That is also my reason, not sending my D to Wellesey.
(My D has excellent SAT/GPA/ECs.)
Anyway, don’t rely on Wellesley’s NPC through college board.
