The ethernet cable I have does not plug directly into the wall for a phone jack. It requires a modem and it plugs into the modem. Will this ethernet cable work at the dorms? Or how does the internet situation work? Will a modem be provided, do we bring one, or do we plug it directly into the wall?

If we plug it directly into the wall, can someone tell me what that kind of cable is called?

Hm but the thing is the openings in walls for phones are a lot smaller than the part that sticks out from my ethernet cable. The one that plugs into the modem is bigger, and phone line ones are smaller, so how would that work? Are the ports at UC Davis bigger to accomodate that, or do we need to buy a special type of cable?

An ethernet cable is all you need. I lived in a triple, so we were provided with a modem (there were only 2 ethernet jacks in our room). You plug it into the wall.

Your ethernet cable will be fine. It does not need to be connected to a modem, as you the internet will be provided directly from the port. No need for a phone cable (RJ-45)!

The ‘modem’ you are referring to is actually just a network switch. Since most triples were designed to be doubles, there are only two active internet ports. The switch allows all three students to be able to access the Internet :)

Also to anyone with experience living in the dorms, is a 15 or 25 foot cable really required, as they say? Mine is about 6 feet, and I’m wondering if I really need to buy a new one.

If it is the standard double configuration, I think your ethernet port is directly below your desk… and in that case, 6 feet should be long enough :).

For some buildings (especially in Cuarto and the older buildings in Tercero), the ports are underneath the bed which is pretty inconvenient…lol.

Hrmm… for a triple… I’m not quite sure how they configured it. You might be lucky and have the switch under your desk. If it happens to be that your cable is too short, you can purchase one at the bookstore for pretty cheap. Rite Aid (across the street from Segundo North) sells them as well, but they are like thrice the price of the bookstore’s!
