I am a first year this year staying in Watson Webb and I was wondering if there was an outlet for an ethernet cable (or if this is unnecessary). Also is there a certain length cord I should have so that it can reach the outlet? Thanks.

Bring the cord, for times when the wireless might get slow in some dorms.

Thank You!

Consider bringing a power strip with a long cord, as the plugs never seem to be in the right place. A door stop is great, since the doors automatically close. You will want to prop your door open on move in day, and later to be social with your hall mates. A cord for your printer is good too, as wireless printing does not always work. Finally, on moving day, bring a hand truck to help get your stuff in the dorm- it is a long way from the parking area to the entrance to the dorm.

My son lived in the old dorms, and we didn’t need a hand truck. We arrived early (before 10 am) and got a parking space near his dorm. There were plenty of helpers. He was unloaded in 15 minutes and then I moved the car to the stadium parking lot and walked back to help him get settled.

Read the U.'s rules on fire hazards. Regular extension cords are not allowed - you can only use the power strips (which come with a heavy-duty cord). There also are limits on what you can put on the walls, under the fire code.

Moved my daughter in last year to Balz Dobie. Very limited parking for lot shared by 2 dorms last year, and more dorms this year. There were helpers early in the day, but many, many more kids moving in than helpers. The hand truck saved us, as the entrance doors to Balz Dobie and Watson Webb are a long way from the parking lot. (Especially when you are loaded down with stuff…)

Is the wall plug in for the ethernet a USB or like a phone jack? I’m just not sure what type I am supposed to get.

It will be a standard Ethernet jack (cat5), not USB. If you don’t have an Ethernet port in your laptop you will need to bring your own Ethernet-to-USB adapter.

Okay thank you so much! And I have a MacBook Pro, so I’m assuming that has an ethernet port…?

Yes, a MacBook Pro has an ethernet port.

A MacBook Pro with retina display does not have an ethernet port. The regular MacBook Pro (without retina display) does have an Ethernet port.
