hey, my router just crapped out, and rather than deal with STC again, would it be possible to just get an ethernet splitter and use it on ucla's network?

more to the point, does anyone currently use one?

I think you can just because I heard you can borrow ethernet splitters from the front desk/STC..not absolutely sure though.

you can borrow an ethernet splitter from STC for free, if you're in a triple.
it becomes very, very not free if you fail to return it in june

brings up a good point...does that mean you have to pay for the router now that it's broken?

no, it's my own router.

but its kind of a pain to drag all the comps down there to have them registered, so rather than get one of their hubs id rather just buy like a 15 dollar little forked ethernet plug thing.

When I had my router registered, STC didn't require me to bring down all my comps, contrary to what the policy said.

Heh. I remember back in 1996, I called a tech support hotline about the very same idea. I told them, there must be a way to split the ethernet cable without using a hub. In short, they told me, "Its impossible, each computer is assigned one specific ip, you can't split a cable to two computers." Its funny how the world works and how people use the word "IMPOSSIBLE!!!!"

Anyway, a quick google search brought this up.

meh..

thanks for everything, just went and got a splitter...everything works great.

btw, you don't need the UCLA STP to connect to the network, contrary to what everyone says......

^so they don't really need to register your computer? hmm..

no u know that stupid policy manager that everyone installs on their computer at the beginning of the year?

i took it off. no problems whatsoever.

lol. wow. i wonder what it's for then.

who knows....this school is full of pointless garbage like that.

if you're ever in deneve, look at the elevators. they have freaking DOORS in front of them....that are capable of closing and locking, provided you have a key.

why........

definitely have to check that out

why? they're fire doors.
ever notice how they're always closed after fire drills? keep people out of the elevators... keep fire out of the elevator shafts...
hmm i think it's mostly the people they're concerned about xD

which is a REALLY good idea if there ever happen to be people in an elevator during a fire, and the shafts shut down.

it's not like everything locks down right away... xD

it does if theres a fire in the elevator control room.

hmm and where would that be...?
innocent
ok jkjkjkjkjkjk.
i'm starting to wonder if i'm even right about this.

who knows...who cares, really.

all that matters is that ucla is spending (probably) thousands of our dollars on doors in front of our elevators that drunken floormates can close and get a laugh out of.

ooh, see, there's a use for them! ;)
is glad i don't live near the doors
